FCC opens an Exposition commemorating its 125-year history

The Chairwoman of the FCC Group, Esther Alcocer Koplowitz, and the company's chief executive, Pablo Colio Abril, opened an exhibition this morning commemorating the company's 125-year history, bringing together for the first time in a single display its most notable milestones, achievements and the impact it has had over more than a century of activity.

The Chairwoman addressed those in attendance, highlighting the significance of this anniversary and what it means for the institution: "Today we proudly celebrate 125 years of FCC Group history. Since 1900, the group has been present in the life of cities and caring for people's well-being. With more than 71,000 employees in over 25 countries, our talent is our greatest asset and reflects our legacy of more than a century of innovation and social commitment. We celebrate this anniversary with pride in being part of a unique history. Personally, I am very proud that my grandfather, Ernesto Koplowitz, founded Construcciones y Contratas, and later my mother promoted the company on which FCC is based today, under the leadership of Carlos Slim. This legacy fills us with pride and drives us forward with the certainty that we have a bright future ahead of us."

Since its foundation in 1900, FCC has been able to adapt to change, expand internationally and consolidate its position as a benchmark in environmental services, water management, construction and concession project development, with a firm commitment to innovation and sustainability.

The exhibition brings together a carefully curated selection of historical documents, unpublished photographs, emblematic objects and material resources such as vehicles, lorries, etc., reflecting FCC's evolution and commitment to society since its foundation in 1900. Through a tour of five rooms, visitors will learn about the most significant milestones, as well as the challenges and transformations experienced over the last 125 years.

And we can see how, at the beginning of the last century, the company contributed to the construction of cities and played a very important role in making them more liveable thanks to its promotion of waste management and urban sanitation; and how, in the mid-20th century, the FCC Group understood the importance of transport and communications and participated in the construction of kilometres of motorways, railway lines and underground lines, while also becoming involved in the management and cleaning of parks and gardens.

In the exhibition, as you move through the rooms dedicated to the 1970s, you can see how the company began to undertake major international projects, marking the beginning of a period of expansion and international growth. At this point in the exhibition, we also see how FCC was able to anticipate one of the great challenges of the future: the management of water as an essential resource. With strategic vision, it committed to the efficient management of the entire water cycle, incorporating advanced technologies and innovative practices that guaranteed a sustainable supply to millions of homes.

In addition, FCC has been involved in major events such as the Seville Universal Exposition, which left an indelible mark on many generations, where it built bridges that are now architectural icons and some of the most emblematic pavilions of the exhibition. But its commitment to progress did not stop there. It embarked on the adventure of building high-speed rail, a technological milestone that revolutionised travel in our country and restored the prominence of the railway, consolidating it as a fast, efficient and sustainable transport option. These milestones, which reflect its capacity for innovation and its commitment to development and social welfare, are part of its history and inspire it to look to the future with optimism and determination.

As you move through the rooms, you can see that, with the start of the new millennium, FCC continued to be firmly committed to the environment with large and innovative projects in waste management and recycling, water and construction, in which society played a crucial role by adopting new habits in favour of sustainability and protecting the planet.

In the second decade of the 21st century, the rise of new technologies profoundly transformed the way we live, communicate and work. In this context, FCC's engineers and teams continued to focus on innovation, driving technological advances in all areas of the FCC Group's business and promoting their application, with the aim of maintaining the company's position as a benchmark in all its sectors over time.

This exhibition shows that FCC is facing the coming years with reasonable optimism, confident that it has sufficiently solid conditions on which to build a business future in line with its brilliant track record.

The history of the FCC Group is one of constant adaptation and innovation. The company has evolved to respond to the needs of society, and this anniversary encourages it to continue working with the same passion and commitment that has characterised the Group since day one and to remain a driving force for progress for present and future generations.

The Spanish Chamber of Commerce in the UK officially recognises FCC’s outstanding contributions to the UK market. The accolade was accepted by its President, Mrs. Esther Alcocer Koplowitz, at an Award Ceremony celebrated at the Spanish Ambassador’s Residence in London.

The Spanish Chamber of Commerce in the UK has presented its Eduardo Barrachina Golden Award 2025 to FCC, a world-leading construction company. The award was received by Mrs. Esther Alcocer Koplowitz, President of FCC Group, during a reception held at the Residence of the Spanish Ambassador in London.

FCC, ranked as Spain’s fourth-largest construction firm and among the top 27 worldwide, is renowned for its expertise in transport infrastructure projects as well as residential and non-residential construction.

Operating in the United Kingdom for over 25 years, FCC has established itself as one of the country’s leading construction companies. Its portfolio includes major projects such as the N6 and M50 motorways in Ireland, Grangegorman University in Dublin, the Mersey Bridge in Liverpool and the extension of the North Runway at Dublin Airport. FCC also played a key role in developing infrastructure for the London 2012 Olympic Games, specifically the International Broadcast Centre (IBC).

Formerly known as the Annual Golden Award, the Eduardo Barrachina Golden Award was recently renamed to honour the Chamber’s late President, Mr. Eduardo Barrachina, who was renowned for his commitment to excellence and his pivotal role in fostering Spanish-British business relations. The accolade remains one of the Chamber’s flagship corporate events, recognising the outstanding achievements of a Spanish company operating in the UK market, with previous winners including Indra (2024), RIU Hotels (2023) and Navantia (2022).

H.E. the Ambassador of Spain to the United Kingdom, Mr. José Pascual Marco, hosted the event at his residence in London and gave the institutional welcome, before congratulating FCC on its achievement. Guests were then welcomed on behalf of the Spanish Chamber by Mr. Juan Carlos Machuca, who was elected President of the institution in July 2025, following the passing of Mr. Eduardo Barrachina. Mr. Machuca emphasised the importance of the award and FCC’s commitment to the UK market, stating:

“This event is one of the Chamber’s most emblematic annual occasions, where we recognise the excellence, resilience and innovation of a Spanish company operating in the UK market. It is a tribute not only to business success, but to the enduring partnership between Spain and the United Kingdom – a relationship the Chamber has been promoting for nearly 140 years.”

He added: “Our member companies continue to lead, grow and inspire, and the Chamber is proud to stand alongside them. FCC is a perfect example of this spirit – delivering complex infrastructure, pioneering environmental solutions and creating real social value in the UK,” he continued, “These are values worth recognising. FCC is not only a business success story – it is a vital contributor to the sustainability and wellbeing of this country.”

Mr. Machuca then invited Mrs. Esther Alcocer Koplowitz to collect the award. A distinguished leader in the international business community, Mrs. Alcocer Koplowitz’s attendance highlighted the prestige of the award and FCC Group’s significant role in the UK market. Upon receiving it, Mrs. Alcocer Koplowitz stated:“Since the year 1900, we have participated in the development of some of the most important infrastructure projects on the planet, with the aim of improving the quality of life of the local communities in which we operate. Our leadership is measured not only by the number and scale of the projects we carry out, but also by the impact we generate on society, the environment, and the economy”.

“The essence of the company has always been its employees. Passion, tenacity, and resilience are the values that best define us. These are the values I learned from my mother, Esther Koplowitz, who sustained this company through challenging times. Our teams are, without a doubt, FCC's greatest asset and the reason for our achievements. With our determination to do things well and the strength we possess as a group, based on the leadership that Carlos Slim provides, we will continue to move forward together, generating value for everyone, and especially for the people in the UK”.

AENOR renews FCC's tax risk management system certification

AENOR renews FCC's tax risk management system certification

The Spanish Association for Standardisation and Certification (AENOR) has carried out the second follow-up audit, verifying the System's compliance with the requirements specified in the reference standard UNE 19602:2019.

This demonstrates FCC's commitment to best practices in corporate governance by including the necessary policies and controls to minimise tax risk in its management model.

This second follow-up audit was passed after an exhaustive analysis of tax risk policies, systems, procedures and controls by the certifying body AENOR.

The UNE 19602 standard defines requirements and recommendations for tax risk control that help companies implement a management system that facilitates the identification, prevention and detection of tax risks, in order to avoid additional tax assessments, penalties or offences against the Treasury. It also facilitates transparency vis-à-vis the tax authorities and ethical compliance by the organisation in its relations with the tax authorities.

In three months FCC obtains contracts to build five football stadiums outside Spain worth a total of 874 million euro

  • Four contracts are in Poland and one is in Algeria

In three months, FCC has been awarded the contracts to build five football stadiums: four in Poland for the 2012 EUFA European Football Championship, and a large sports centre in Tizi Ouzou (Algeria). The contracts are worth a total of 874 million euro.

The most recent contract landed by the company is a joint venture with the private Algerian group ETRHB Haddad to build the sports complex developed by the Ministry of Youth and Sports in the Tizi Ouzou province in Algeria. The project will cost 359 million euro and construction will take 30 months.

The project includes the construction of a football stadium with 50,000 roofed seats, a 6,500-seat athletics stadium, car parks and a training field as well as site development and resurfacing of the surrounding area.

The football stadium grandstand will boast a unique cable-stayed roof built with metallic trusses.

The athletics stadium will be comprised of athletics tracks and a lateral grandstand. Its construction will be similar to the football stadium, but without roofed seating.

Poland

FCC has been awarded contracts to build four football stadiums in Poland for the 2012 UEFA European Football Championship.

l Warsaw National Stadium. It will boast 55,000 seats. The contract is worth 295 million euro. An impressive steel-cable truss construction was chosen for the roof, giving the stadium a particularly stunning appearance. Construction should be completed in 24 months.

l Krakow. The existing stadium in downtown Krakow, home to Poland's oldest football club (est. 1906), will be completely converted and rebuilt. The stadium currently has 7,000 seats, of which 1,100 are roofed. The new stadium, designed by Spanish firm Arquitectos Lamela, will have 15,500 seats, and the tribunes will be replaced by modern tiers in reinforced concrete, partially roofed. The budget totals 35 million euro.

l Baltic Arena (Gdansk). The stadium will be built on a 39-hectare site close to the city centre. It will have 44,000 seats and 6,500 parking spaces. The 15,891 m2 structure emulates Gdansk's traditional ship structure. The budget totals 95.5 million euro.

l Posen Stadium. The existing stadium in Posen will be converted and enlarged. Two stands and the entire roof will be newly built. When completed, the stadium will seat 47,000. A total of 1,600 parking spaces will be available to visitors. The contract is worth 89 million euro.

Experience in football stadium construction

FCC has broad experience building football stadiums worldwide. Its most distinguished work includes the Allianz Arena in Munich, which hosted the opening ceremony of the 2006 FIFA World Cup and is one of the world's most spectacular sports venues.
FCC has also remodelled and expanded Santiago Bernabéu stadium for Real Madrid; Vicente Calderón stadium for Atlético de Madrid; Nou Camp stadium for FC Barcelona; the Sardinero football stadium in Santander; Ciudad Deportiva Joan Gamper, for Barcelona; and Real Madrid's new training ground, in Valdebebas. In 2007, it obtained the contract to build the new 75,000-seat stadium for Valencia Club de Fútbol (replacing the Mestalla stadium).
Espanyol's new stadium will be inaugurated in early August in Cornellà de Llobregat (Barcelona); it will seat 40,500. The football club's new offices, museum and shops will be relocated to the stadium.
In view of the upcoming EUFA European Football Championship in 2012, FCC's Austrian subsidiary, Alpine, has remodelled and expanded the following stadiums: Wals-Siezenheim, in Salzburg (30,000 seats); Tivoli, in Innsbruck; and Wörthersee, in Klagenfurt, which won the Construction Award from the Austrian State of Carinthia. The company recently completed construction of the cricket stadium in Dubai.

FCC's foothold in Algeria

FCC already operates in Algeria through its water management subsidiary, Aqualia, with two major contracts awarded by state-run Algerian Energy Company (AEC) to build and manage two large seawater desalination plants: one in Mostaganem, close to Oran, with the capacity to treat 200,000 cubic meters of water per day, and the other in Cap Djinet, close to Argel, which will treat 100,000 cubic meters per day.

FCC celebrates the fourth edition of Innovation Day, an innovation event promoted by its Digital Innovation Lab

For the fourth consecutive year, the FCC Group has held its Innovation Day, an event promoted by the company's Digital Innovation Lab (DLab), which highlights the strategic role of innovation not only as an internal strength, but also as a fundamental lever in creating value for the Group.

The event was opened by Alfredo García, Director of Systems and IT at the FCC Group, and Manel Miranda, Director of IT for Innovation and Business Relations at the FCC Group, who highlighted the firm commitment of FCC and Inmocemento to innovation, pointing out that Innovation Day is an event that showcases a small part of the advances, ideas and initiatives that have been launched to drive the company's future. In addition, on the occasion of the company's 125th anniversary, they recalled that innovation has been a fundamental pillar of the Group since its inception.

Throughout the day, presentations were given by FCC Construcción, Aqualia, FCC enviro and Cementos Portland Valderrivas. In this way, each business area of the FCC Group and the Inmocemento Group had the opportunity to present the latest developments and strategic advances in their respective fields of operation.

These presentations began with a round table discussion featuring Antonio Bravo from FCC enviro, Antonio Burgueño from FCC Construcción, and Pedro Rodríguez from Aqualia, which addressed the FCC Group's innovation throughout its 125-year history. Next, Carlos Bouhaben, from FCC enviro, presented PLAUSU, an Autonomous Platform for Urban Services. Marina Navarro, also from FCC enviro, then presented the ‘Circular Bioeconomy in Action’ initiative, focusing on the I+Dehesas projects. For his part, Luis Herreras, from Cementos Portland Valderrivas, explained how they are redefining the “C” in cement: Quality, Colour... and Commitment to CO₂. Later, Silvia Tavera, from Microsoft, detailed how AI agents can enhance everyday life. Marcelino Ortega, from Aqualia, presented ‘The Virtual Operator: Innovation in Knowledge Management’, while Iván Arbós, from FCC Construcción, unveiled the EDIFICTECH project. Finally, Pilar de Vicente and Manel Miranda, from the FCC Group's Systems and Technology Division, closed the presentations by highlighting the role that AI will play in the company's future.

These exhibitions have not only enabled the sharing of knowledge and initiatives, but have also highlighted how technological innovation is being applied to generate efficiencies and new solutions in key sectors such as construction, integrated water management, the environment and cement.

In addition to the presentations, the event featured an exhibitor area that served as a strategic meeting point. In this space, the different business areas of the FCC Group showcased some of their innovation projects. Furthermore, the presence of technology companies such as Microsoft, GalamCam and Casual Robots highlighted the importance of external collaboration in the Group's innovation ecosystem, allowing for the exploration of joint solutions and new digital transformation tools.

At the same time, Aqualia and FCC have inaugurated their NICE project at the Las Tablas Corporate Headquarters, a plant for the recovery, regeneration and reuse of grey water from the building itself. This initiative contributes directly to reducing the water footprint of the facilities, demonstrating the FCC Group's environmental commitment.

FCC revenues up 7.7% in the first nine months of the year

  • EBITDA rose to €1,058.6 million, up 7.5% year on year
  • At the end of September, the revenue backlog stood at €49,720 million, up 7.3% from the end of the previous year, driven by the international activity of the Construction division
FCC revenues up 7.7% in the first nine months of the year

The FCC Group recorded revenue of €7,051.5 million in the first nine months of the year, up 7.7% year on year. This result was driven by a balanced combination of acquisitions made by the Environment division in the United Kingdom, the United States and France during 2024, as well as by organic growth across all business areas. The Concessions division outperformed, posting growth of 38%, fuelled by the start-up of new contracts, followed by the Water division, which also recorded significant growth across its various lines of activity.

The income statement also benefited from the positive performance in terms of EBITDA, which climbed to €1,058.6 million, up 7.5% from the previous year, mainly supported by higher revenue. EBITDA, at 15%, remained at a similar level to that recorded in the same period of 2024.

Looking at the EBITDA performance by business area, the Environment division outperformed, reaching €546.1 million, up 11% on the same period in 2024, followed by the Concessions division, which reported EBITDA of €44.6 million, up 8.3% year on year.

In the same period, profit attributable to the parent company dropped to €156.9 million, compared with €429 million in the previous year (-63.4%). The difference between the two periods is due to the spin-off of the Cement and Real Estate divisions carried out in November 2024, which contributed €148.5 million to attributable profit up to September last year, compared with no contribution in the current period. The other factors behind this change include the strength of the euro against various other currencies, the accounting effect of provisions recognised in certain activities, and a number of investment adjustments in waste treatment assets.

On 30 September, consolidated net financial debt stood at €3,520.4 million, up 17.7% on the same period in the previous year, mainly due to investments totalling €857.7 million.

The FCC Group’s revenue backlog grew substantially during the period, reaching a total of €49,720 million at the end of September, up 7.3% from the end of the previous year. This growth was spearheaded by the Construction division, largely supported by the international award of major infrastructure contracts. On 19 June, an agreement was signed with Cívica, Ibisan’s partner holding the remaining 50% of its capital, under which FCC Concessions took control of and began fully consolidating the concession.

Milestones

Environment

  • On 15 July, the subsidiary company, which operates the US platform, strengthened its presence with the acquisition of Wheelabrator South Broward Inc., owner of the South Broward waste energy recovery plant (Fort Lauderdale, Florida). The acquisition value was $285 million. This addition will act as a platform to consolidate the company's entry into the Treatment business in Florida, as well as to develop synergies with the waste collection operations already underway in its extensive area of influence.
  • Additionally, last September, a contract was signed to purchase Cumbria Waste Group in the United Kingdom, a company that carries out various waste collection and recycling operations in the Cumbria region for municipal and commercial clients. Its location will allow us to leverage synergies with both current activities in the region and those currently underway, in Waste Treatment and EfW. The transaction was completed on 15 October, 2025, with the payment of £76 million.
  • On 30 September, the municipality of Granada signed a new street cleaning and waste collection contract, which will now be managed by FCC Medio Ambiente for the first time. It has a value of €740 million and will run for 15 years. This is consolidated after the end of various appeals and the extension affecting its management since 2020. Among miscellaneous contracts of lesser relevance, we should note the award by Montcada i Reixac municipality of the new waste collection & transport and street cleaning contract for eight years and a portfolio of 41 million euros.
  • As regards to new Treatment contracts, the contract for selective waste collection and management & operation of the El Culebrete waste treatment plant and landfill (Mancomunidad de la Ribera, Navarre, Spain) was renewed, with a portfolio of 71.3 million euros for 10 years and coverage for 19 municipalities (92,500 inhabitants).
  • FCC Enviro is positioned as the flagship mark for the area, FCC Servicios Medio Ambiente Holding S.A. Following recent acquisitions and entry into new markets, the company has adopted a global name that is easily recognisable worldwide and with which all stakeholders can identify. FCC Enviro is an easy-to-understand name, closely linked to environmental activities, while establishing a connection with the various brands of the four geographic platforms, which remain unchanged (FCC Medio Ambiente, FCC Environment, FCC Environmental Services, FCC Environnement, etc.).

Water

  • During the second quarter of the year, an inaugural contract was entered into in Peru, covering the design, funding, construction, operation and maintenance of a wastewater treatment system in Chincha. The €78 million project is expected to serve 345,000 residents directly.
  • Last September, Aqualia renewed its contract for the operation and maintenance of the Abu Rawash wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) in Cairo, Egypt, for a period of four years, until September 2029.
  • As for acquisitions, Aqualia Latinoamérica signed a purchase agreement last August for all assets related to the provision of water, sewage and sanitation services in Villa Olímpica (northern part of the municipality of Galapa, Colombia). This means adding €91.4 million in income portfolio, with a concession term of 50 years.

Construction

  • In August, the Connect Plus Partners consortium, a joint venture between FCC Construcción and Halmar International, won the contract for the design and construction of phase 2 of the Second Avenue Subway in New York City, valued at over €1,500 million (€881 million corresponding to FCC Construcción), with the contract starting in September.
  • Also in September, in Mexico, the consortium comprised of FCC Construcción and CICSA was awarded the construction (50/50) and design contract for 111 kilometres of the Tren del Norte, on the Saltillo to Santa Catarina stretch. The project has a budget of over €1,470 million and a 31-month execution period (this work has not yet been included in the portfolio at the end of this period).
  • In August, the contract for the first phase of construction of the Qiddya stadium in Saudi Arabia was awarded (with a 55% stake for FCC Construcción and a 45% stake for Nesma Holding Co.). With the completion of the "early phase", the first stage of the Design and Construction contract begins, amounting to more than €380 million.
  • Additionally, in this third quarter, the North End Connectors consortium, where FCC Construcción holds a 33.3% stake, has been granted financing from Infrastructure Ontario and Metrolinx for the Yonge North Subway Extension Advance Tunnel project in Ontario. The design, construction and financing contract is valued at $1,400 million, of which €477 million correspond to FCC Construcción. It includes the design and construction of a 6.3-kilometre tunnel, as well as a section of the existing rail corridor. The scope of works also includes the supply of tunnel boring machines, the installation of tunnel linings and ancillary activities. Once the design development phase is complete, construction is expected to begin in the fourth quarter of 2026 and be completed by 2030.

Concessions

  • The increase in user traffic on tram concessions through September was up between 1.6% and 5.5% YoY. More than 32 million passengers used the lines in operation in Murcia, Parla and Zaragoza. Meanwhile, traffic levels (IMD) on the collection of road concessions grew by 1% to 3% during the first nine months of the year.
  • Between April and May, the final two sections of the A465 motorway between the towns of Hirwaun and Dowlais in Wales (co-managed by FCC Concesiones, with a 42.5% stake) came into operation, joining the three that started operating at the beginning of the year. This milestone marks the completion of the contract's construction phase, which began in October 2020.
  • On 19 June, an agreement was signed with Cívica, Ibisan's partner that holds the remaining 50% of the capital, whereby FCC Concesiones takes global control and consolidates concession.

FCC opens an Exposition commemorating its 125 year history
